I am frantically trying to post all of my wedding planning ideas so I can show all you mommas how it all turned out! Yes, I got married last Sunday and it WAS my dream wedding
But I promise to post more about that later in the week!
First off, I wanted to write a little piece about looking for and deciding upon a flower girl dress and accessories! I’ve already talked about modern flower girl ideas and how to make your flower girls feel special before the big day, now lets talk about that crucial topic: the dress!
When searching for my flower girls’ dresses I did the whole nine yards: I started off looking on David’s Bridal, then went to the major department stores (Nordstrom, Macy’s, Bloomingdales), I even contemplated sewing my own dresses (but with 4 girls total, I thought better of it). Finally, I narrowed down my search to J. Crew and Boden. These have been my favorite shops for my own clothes and shoes and their styles are always classic but with an unexpected twist of artistry and a modern flair. Neither of the shops disappointed, but in the end I fell in love with a dress from miniBoden. Boden is a store from the UK, I would describe it as the UK version of J.Crew, and they have fabulous kids clothes–definitely go check it out!
I created silk bouquets for each flower girl in the contrasting coral color from their dresses!
I loved this dress because it was a modern trapeze shape that was perfect for a late-Summer wedding and the design didn’t overpower my flower girls! Since my wedding was going to take place in a garden I didn’t want a distracting and chaotic floral print. I wanted the girls themselves to look like little walking flowers! And at the same time, I didn’t want something too plain and cliche like the dresses I saw at David’s Bridal. The bodice detailing on this dress was the perfect fit for my “Modern Garden” wedding theme and I like the playful ribbon flower design. The sparkling jewel detailing added interest without being overpowering and the “rosewater” pink hue of the dress was flattering on all four of my flower girls with very different skin tones.
I loved their dresses so much that I literally planned my wedding colors around the dress! Deciding upon my “colors” will have to officially wait for another post, but needless to say this little flower girl dress had a lot of influence, especially in the beginning planning stages. Another reason I liked this dress was the practicality. It is made of 100% cotton and the girls can easily find other occasions to wear this dress. It can be dressed up or down, even worn over leggings–bottom line, it is versatile!

So, my tips for the bride-to-be who is planning her own wedding and trying to find that perfect flower girl dress:
1. Think outside the box and get creative: The ivory tea-length taffeta dress with coordinating sash from David’s Bridal has been played out! Get creative with your flower girl dress pursuit and look for something you’ve never seen done before. When she walks down the isle you guests will be thrilled to see your cute little statement dress and let the picture-taking commence!
2. Keep your little girl in mind: Ask yourself these key questions: What would make her feel pretty? What would feel comfortable on her and look good on her skin tone? What could she wear again and where would she wear it? What will the weather be like on my wedding day?
3. Price matters: This is even more important if you are having the flower girl’s parents foot the bill for the dress! Don’t opt for a $100 dress that is too formal for your flower girl to ever wear again, especially with how fast that little girl will grow out of it! Trust me, her mommy and daddy will thank you for keeping THEIR budget in mind when choosing her dress!
